Primolut contains Norethisterone, a synthetic version of the hormone progesterone. It works by maintaining hormone levels that prevent your womb lining from shedding, which means your period won’t start until you stop taking the tablets.
This treatment is doctor-approved and widely used in Ireland forsafe, short-term period delaybefore holidays, exams, sports events, or special occasions.

You should start taking Primolut three days before your expected period. This allows the medication to maintain hormone levels that prevent the uterine lining from shedding. Starting later than this may reduce its effectiveness
If you’re already on a combined oral contraceptive, you usually don’t need Primolut. You can delay your period safely by skipping the pill-free week and starting your next pack immediately. However, if you’re on a phasic or triphasic pill, check with your doctor first.
It is not a contraceptive, use barrier protection if needed and continue your regular contraception unless advised otherwise. Short, medically supervised use isn’t linked to long-term effects on fertility. If you use hormonal contraception, the approach to delaying a bleed may differ; tell the doctor exactly which method you use.
Delay is for a short, defined period agreed with your doctor. Possible effects include breast tenderness, bloating, mood changes, headache, and nausea. Rare but serious risks (e.g., blood clots) require urgent care, seek immediate help for chest pain, sudden breathlessness, severe headache/vision change, or one-sided calf swelling. List all medicines and supplements so your doctor can check for interactions.
